Aaron D. Van Scyoc
I graduated from St. John's University with a bachelor's degree in T.V. & Film. While attending SJU, I pursued my passion for theatre through the Chappell Players Theatre Group, where I received a wide-ranging, hands-on education in performance and stagecraft.
My love of the dramatic arts led me to taking on a variety of roles, gaining experience in every technical and creative aspect of theatrical production. Though primarily a director, actor, and writer, I have a diverse background that includes stage management, producing, and theatre administration.
I take both an intellectual and emotional approach to theatre, showing major deference to the text while working to connect audiences to the piece on a personal level. As a director, my work is very process-oriented. It is my belief that an enjoyable yet vigorous rehearsal process produces an engaging show. I utilize improvisation, games, and unique character building exercises to create safe, fun spaces for actors to take risks and make strong choices.
Diversity makes better art. I work hard at finding what makes each individual artist special or unique, and I play to those strengths. Representation is very important to me, as I know how powerful it is to see yourself in a story, while also being exposed to new perspectives and experiences. As a gay man, I am particularly interested in what makes a piece of theatre queer or how to draw those themes out, when appropriate.
I cut my teeth on college theatre, and am very adept in working with student artists, as well as professionals. Whatever the case, I strive for excellence and professionalism in every show. No matter the venue or budget, it is my goal to create an exceptional product that both cast and crew are proud to have worked on.
